Polygons #4 Report
Through a cold wintery chill and the November rain, 75 of the regions developers and development students gathered for the final polygons evening of 2006 in the courtyard pub, Derby. The panel featured Adam Russell (Eurocom) who longs for a time when we would stop asking if games will make us cry, Nik Makin (Rare) who is as excited about Assassin’s Creed as is he Sneak King from Burger King, a slightly quieter Iain Simons than we are used to, and a rather tired and emotional but well fuelled Dan Marchant, who cannot be mentioned again due to contractual reasons ;-)
Braving the cold and making the most of the free bar courtesy of Eurocom were developers from Free Rad, Rare, Eurocom, Strawdogs and quite a few apologies from those of you up against alpha and beta deadlines.
No one is quite sure who won last nights quiz, but it is safe to say that indie development is thriving in the UK, digital downloads will have a huge impact on mid sized developers, no one seems to care about the PS3 launch, but everyone wants a Wii. We wrapped the night up like a poorely wrapped xmas orange with a rather heated debate on the finer visceral points of Gears of War, and the importance of co-op multi player with a vote and shouts of “but it is still too short and rubbish!” So another high brow evening then.
The next event will be in Feburary, so drop us a line at Polygons@pixel-lab.co.uk if you want to be added to the polygons mailing list.
Thanks again to the Creative Industries Network and Eurocom for helping to fund the event.
Polygons #4
“Polygons #4” will be chance to again hear from some our regions most interesting developers, Iain Simons and Dan Marchant at evening of disucssion, networking and getting together.
More questions, more discussions, and some better rules this month! Topical discussion, industry rants and a chance to find out what the hell Rare’s piñata game is all about, after last months no show!
Regular guests Dan Marchant (Consultant , The Obscure Consultancy. - Business Development Director, Strawdog Studios) and Iain Simons ( Writer and Creative Director game city) are joined by Nicholas Makin ( Senior Software Engineer at Rare Ltd ) and Adam Russel (Programmer at Eurocom)
There is the offer of 2 for 1 on most drinks from 8pm in the bar and as Eurocom have very kindly offered to sponsor the event, we will be offering a free bar (who said xmas doesn’t come early) or until the tab runs out!
The event will be held in the courtyard pub again but this time with mics, and proper room for everyone.
We will kick off at 6.30, but will start proper at around 7.00.
We usually get wrapped up by 8.30 and then to the bar for more networking.
This event is part of the Creative Industries Network family. More information on Cin can be found at their website http://www.creative-cin.co.uk/
Educational, entertaining and a chance to catch up with colleagues.
Please pass this on to anyone you may feel would be interested.
The more the merrier.
